LPR systems are often promoted as easily integrable software products or easily integrable “smart” cameras with onboard LPR. Unfortunately, there is a huge gap between marketing and reality when it comes to integration.
My experience is that 9 out of 10 integrators will say that LPR technology integration is by no means an “easy” task. They tend to regard it a challenge and consider it a great feat when LPR software does what it is supposed to at the end of the day: analyze the video stream of the camera, gather individual OCR results and images into events and push the event data to the business application. Even today LPR integration involves serious software development. A development task which consumes precious resources which integrators grudgingly accept but are not necessarily happy with.
LPR evolution reminds me a lot of that of the software industry. Back in the 19th century, Ada Byron, Countess of Lovelace created the first computer program after recognizing the plethora of possibilities a computing machine holds instead of using it for the sole purpose of running calculations. Nowadays, using computing machines – computers – and computer programs is the way of life for modern people because of its convenience.
I strongly believe that the LPR industry has finally come to a new evolutionary step, the creation of an “LPR machine” – plug ‘n play LPR that no longer requires integrators to do complex programming so they can focus on higher level tasks.
