Let’s start with a small recap of the series so far. We discussed the top 5 misconceptions of LPR and came to the conclusion that system specifics will differ according to the intended purpose of the given LPR system. The critical success factor of any given system is either hitrate, maximum accuracy or maximum processing speed. The last post was about hitrate and the role of triggering mechanisms. This time I’ll be focusing on maximum accuracy..
There are two important conditions to fulfill when aiming for maximum accuracy with a system:
- Ensure the readability of the license plates in the images;
- Implement sophisticated triggering.
The two conditions depend on each other to a certain degree. To ensure readability you should pay attention that the license plate is in optimal position within the image, pictures are made with proper resolution and with the smallest possible distortion.
The good news is that all conditions can be met by using a quality LPR camera , and implementing a proper triggering method. But what is a “proper triggering method” in this case? Ideal triggering should be able to choose the images of each vehicle that are the most relevant when it comes to reading their license plates.
You will also need a reliable LPR library that does the recognition and result validation based on as few images as possible per vehicle. Asura’s ARU offers a smart LPR library that includes reliable license plate recognition and a smart way of choosing the relevant images of the live stream of your LPR cameras.
